Cat Urinary Tract Infection

Reader Question: Is there a type of cat food that will help to prevent a urinary tract infection?

My cat Fleagal had a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) and was in the hospital for 5 days. He had to have a catheter put in to help but he didn't have stones. He has been home a little more than a week and I have been trying to give him the prescription foods – c/d and so which has not been working so I have been mixing it with his old wet food. My question is: are there any other foods that I can give him to help prevent this from happening again?

My cat is a male regular rescue cat going to be 11yrs olds in July. He has no other health issues.

Thank you.

Vet Suggestions Cat Food To Better Handle Cat Urinary Problems

Hi Jill,

Other pet food manufacturers make diets to handle urinary problems in cats, so if yours doesn’t like the c/d it might be worth trying a different brand. Purina UR is very similar to c/d, but you should talk to your veterinarian about which would be best based on your cat’s particular circumstances.

I have successfully managed some of these cats by feeding them a high quality over-the-counter canned diet and monitoring their urinary pH. The extra water in the diet helps prevent a relapse, and if the urinary pH isn’t ideal on nonprescription canned food, medications can be used to move it in the direction it needs to go.

Best of luck,

Jennifer Coates, DVM
