Kittens Eyes have Matted Up
by Mary Garcier Followed By Suggestion From Our Vet
(Chattahooochee, FL)
Reader Question: There are some kittens that have a lot of matter around their eyes. They close up and we have been taking a warm damp cloth and trying to keep them cleaned off. We do not have the money for a vet so we were hoping there was something we could do that would have a more long term lasting effect.
Suggestion From Our VeterinarianHi Mary,
Kittens are at high risk for developing
upper respiratory infections (URIs) that can cause symptoms like you describe. In some cases, nursing care is all that is required to get kittens through these infections.
Treatment recommendations can include cleaning the eyes and nose with a warm, damp cloth, encouraging them to eat and drink (canned kitten food is best), and if it seems to help, putting them in a steamy bathroom for 10 minutes or so twice a day.
If at any time your kittens appear to be getting worse rather than better, make an appointment with your veterinarian.
