Bump on Cats Stomach

Reader Question: Cat Missing Hair on Stomach

My cat has two round circles of missing hair. Inside the circles are a little brown spot, which looks like a pimple. On the one, we squeezed it and something came out, but it did not look like a tick or flea. What could my cat have? He does not lick the spots really or itch them.

Suggestion from our Veterinarian on Causes for Cat Missing Stomach Hair

Hi,

The list of problems that could be causing lesions like those you describe on your cat's skin is quite long and includes bacterial infections, fungal infections (including ringworm), allergies, irritant reactions, inflammatory disorders, parasites, and more.

To determine what is going on, a veterinarian will need to take a complete health history, perform a physical examination, and probably run some diagnostic tests. In cases like these, I generally recommend starting with skin cytology to look for infections, a fungal culture for ringworm, and skin scrapings to rule out mange mites. A veterinarian can then recommend appropriate treatment or further diagnostics based on the results.
