Kitten Eyes Will Not Open

I have an 8 month old kitten, who whenever he runs to me, he runs right up to my face as if he doesn't realize I am that close to him. This happens when I am sitting in my chair in the living room and he runs really fast to get on my lap but goes right face to face with me. Wonder if he is farsighted.

Another clue is this morning was he was in a back room (which was dark) and when I turned the lights on he came to me but the eyes were tightly shut as if it was painful to open his eyes right away.

Which leads me to think something is wrong with his eyes.

Vet Suggestion: Treating Kitten Eye Problems

Hello Nancy,

The symptoms you describe in your kitten are worth a trip to the veterinary clinic. Your primary care veterinarian can perform a basic ophthalmological exam and run a few simple tests for tear production, the presence of ulcers or wounds on the eyes, and an eye pressure test. If the doctor feels like your cat’s condition warrants it, he or she may recommend that you see a veterinary ophthalmologist. Once a diagnosis has been reached the doctors will be able to discuss treatment options with you.

It is possible that what you describe is simply normal behavior for your cat, but I would not be comfortable assuming that is the case without some follow up.

Best of luck,

Jennifer Coates, DVM
